Terms & Conditions of vehicle hire

Before hiring a self-drive vehicle from Senior Self Drive please take the time to read through our Terms and Conditions below. If you have further questions on anything below or if there’s something we haven’t mentioned, seek clarification by contacting us.

What Do I Need To Hire A Vehicle?

You will need the following:

  • Your driving licence. If you have the card licence you will also need to produce the (counterpart) paper part along with your card.
  • A recent utility bill / bank statement confirming your current address and driving licence address. (Must be within 60 days of hire date)
  • A credit or debit card to pay for your hire.
  • Any additional drivers will need to produce the same documents as the main hirer at the time of hire.

What is the age category to hire a vehicle?

23 - 70 years inclusive.

For hirers between 23 -25 the Insurance excess is increased to £750

  • Drivers must have held a full UK driving licence for at least 2 years.
  • Your driving licence must be free from any convictions/endorsements.
  • Younger drivers are restricted to small cars and light vans only.

Minibuses & MPVs

  • All hirers and drivers must be aged 25 or over.
  • Must have the D1 category on driving licence (for 15 and 17 seat minibuses).
  • Must have held a full licence for at least 2 years.

What vehicle category do I need on my licence?

Category B Cars and Light Commercials
Cars, light commercial vehicle up to and including Luton box van (maximum weight 3.500kgs) and MPVs with no more than 8 passenger seats.

Category C1
Commercial vehicle up to an including a 7.5 tonne truck (maximum weight 7.500kgs).

Category D1
Minibus - maximum of 16 passenger seat.

If I have penalty points on my licence; can I still hire a vehicle?

This will depend on what your endorsements are, but we do accept licences with minor penalty points.

Maximum 6 points and no more than £150 in combined fines.

I do not have a UK driving licence; can I still hire a vehicle?

Yes, but you must provide your drivers licence showing your entitlement (an international driving licence is preferred) and two forms of secondary ID documentation showing your temporary address whilst staying in the UK.

Additional driver?

You can have as many additional drivers as you require. There is a charge for each additional driver, and these charges are applied on a daily basis. Additional drivers are charged at £10 per driver per day.

Long term car and van hire is available

It is possible to arrange a long or short term hire whether travelling in the Leicester area or outside of it. Please ask for further details.

Fuel policy

Our vehicles are provided on a return as you find them basis; you only pay for the fuel you use.

Delivery and collection?

Yes, at an additional cost. We can arrange delivery and collection (Leicester and surrounding areas only).

Please note all private hire customers must sign the documents on the company premises before delivery.

Is the deposit refunded immediately?

Yes. Your deposit is refunded the day you return the vehicle to us. This will be the full amount if there is no new damage, and the fuel is the same as on collection, and free of any discrepancies.

Refunds are done immediately but it may take several days for the refund to get back into your account as all banks and building societies have different procedures.

Can I take the hire vehicle outside of the UK?

You can, but we MUST know if you are planning on taking any vehicle outside of the UK. There are additional procedures that we need to observe and additional charges apply.

I put the wrong fuel in. What do I do?

Stop what you are doing. DO NOT turn the engine on; call our breakdown service straight away. They will assist you. You are liable for all costs in repairing the vehicle.

My vehicle has broken down; who do I call?

There is a break down number available on your hire agreement.

If you break down during our opening hours in the general Leicester area please contact us and we will contact our recovery service on your behalf, or advise you of the best solution to resolve your problem.

Please note punctures and windscreen damage is the hirer's responsibility.

What do I do If I get a puncture?

All damage to the wheels and tyres including punctures and blow-outs are the full responsibility of the hirer. Please do not attempt to change a wheel on any truck or twin rear wheeled vehicle. This is dangerous and you will require professional assistance. If you are uncomfortable, please contact our breakdown service there will be a charge for this service.

What happens if I get a speeding ticket, parking ticket or any other fine?

On receiving a penalty charge notice, we provide all hire information to the relevant authorities who will contact you directly with your penalty.

LEZ - Low Emission Zone

From 3rd January 2012, larger vans and minibuses have needed to meet the Euro 3 emissions standard for particulate matter. Lorries, buses and coaches need to meet Euro IV.

Cars and motorcycles are NOT affected.

Low Emission Zone is not the same as the Central London Congestion charging zone. These are paid separately.

The Zone covers most of Greater London, all roads within Greater London, those at Heathrow and parts of the M1 and M4 motorways within the Greater London Authority; boundaries are included. The M25 is not included.

It runs 24 hours a day, every day. There are exemptions and discounts available for those eligible.

Future charges you may incur NOT meeting the vehicle requirements:

Daily charges vary from £100-£200 a day, with penalty charges from £250-£1000.
